New Research Endeavor

Focus on Autoimmune Disease

image description

Autoimmune diseases affect 16 percent of the U.S. population, equal to cancer and cardiovascular disease combined. The incidence of these diseases is growing, especially among young people and women. The toll these diseases take on our health and health care system also continues to grow, costing hundreds of billions of dollars each year. Building on our expertise in autoimmune diseases, with particular depth in type 1 diabetes, our research is expanding in response to growing evidence that autoimmune diseases share common causes. This realization allows us to leverage discoveries in one disease to a number of other immune system diseases, such as allergy and cancer. Going forward, we will build on our studies of diseases of the human immune system, with the goal of developing an understanding of what defines a healthy immune system and how to rebalance it, enabling us to predict, prevent, reverse and ultimately cure these diseases. This approach is how we will accomplish our vision of a healthy immune system for every individual.
